How to select lubrication grease for crossed roller bearing

2019-04-23

Due to the large differences in physical and mechanical properties and temperature adaptation of different greases, bearings will be applied with diverse grease based on the specific requirement. When select grease for crossed roller bearing, there are three factors that need to be considered: operation temperature, loads, and rotation speed.

select grease for crossed roller bearing

1. Based on Working Temperature

Generally, the viscosity of grease should not be lower than 13mm2/s for ball bearings and not be lower than 20mm2/s for roller bearings. When selecting the grease, the grease point, penetration, and low-temperature performance should be noticed. Since the viscosity of grease is closely related to temperature, the operating temperature of the bearing must be lower than the grease dropping point by 10 to 20 °C. When using synthetic grease, its working temperature should be lower than the dropping point by 20 ~ 30 °C.
Let's put it simply.
(1) When the working temperature is 50-70 °C, select the grease thickened by synthetic greases such as double grease or silicone oil.
(2) In the low-speed spindle application, with working temperature below 70 °C, sodium-based grease is suggested. Aluminum-based grease is for medium-speed. Lithium-based grease or special grease is used for high-speed.
(3) When the working temperature is below 15 °C, it is possible to use a grease thickened with high-viscosity mineral oil or a lithium-based grease thickened with silicone oil.

2. Select Grease for Crossed Roller Bearing Based on Loads

The greater the loads put on the crossed roller bearing, the higher the viscosity of the grease should be. That is, choose the type of grease with a small penetration, to ensure that the lubricating oil film is effectively formed between the contact surfaces under load.

3. Based on Rotation Speed

Because the friction heat generated by the movement of the cage/separators and the rolling elements increased with the bearings rotation speed, so the bearing limit speed also needs to be considered when selecting lubrication grease.

Under normal circumstances, BRS cross cylindrical roller bearings are filled with proper grease before delivery. If the user has special requirements on grease, please contact us(brs@brsbearing.com), we will design customized solutions accordingly.
